Why We Don't Have 'THAT' Conversation

Tuesday, August 2, 2016/Categories: Word on Work

Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle. Plato

Be it difficult or fierce, the longer you delay having ‘that’ conversation the darker it looms and more difficult and fiercer it becomes.

What’s the conversation you’re avoiding, with yourself or another?

Unspoken conversations hang in the air. Like an imminent dark storm clouds, they wait to break and drop an indiscriminate load.

Your subject of that conversation instinctually senses some thing is ‘off’ in the relationship. Given self-awareness will know its what their doing or not doing.

Relationships are shaped and developed by each conversation, what’s said and not said. The unsaid diminishes rapport, trust and authenticity. It creates distance and impasse for the one thing that can bring meaning, resolution and compassion to the relationship – a courageous conversation!

At this stage both parties are fearful. Words have dried up and the relationship sits withering on vine of communication.

What’s it costing you/business not having this conversation?

So why do ‘difficult’ conversations get left unspoken? Why do turn away from underperformance, un-aligned attitudes and conflict?

Perhaps its because we…

  • Like to be liked
  • Don’t know what to say or how to say it
  • Have been unclear with our expectations
  • Don’t find the time
  • Expect a negative reaction
  • Fear contravening employment law

As leaders we are responsible for creating an environment where people can be the best version of themselves. In not having ‘that’ conversation you fail your people and fail to live in to your leadership.

Egoic resistance, with its innate fear, miss names this conversation and names it confrontation. Now the invitation is to armour up, attack and defend and come out winning.
