DIGNIFIED TRANSITIONING NO.1

How to Reduce the Pain of Sacking Employees

Tuesday, August 9, 2016/Categories: Word on Work

Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.Anais Nin

Courage: moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty. Translated from Latin, cor meaning heart.

A dignified employee exit and transition starts from a place heart. What follows is the pluck and grit to have a clean and clear conversation. A heartfelt conversation. One of connection with the willingness to stand in another 'man's' shoes without naming experience.

Making someone redundant can break your heart and the heart of other employees. Your preparation, approach and conversation matters.

Preparation: First, basics; read employee's contract. Know their entitlements, notice, leave, bonus etc.and have a drawn up easy to understand document for them to read and take take away.

Second, prepare the room. A private, quiet, out-of-the way one guaranteed of being uninterrupted. Dignified firing' of an employee is private business. Respect this from the core of your being. Have water. Tissues. A comfortable temperature.

Third, prepare your self. Be in the room ten minutes early. Have everything to hand on an uncluttered table or desk. Have written: Why the redundancy is happening. What the consequences of redundancy are for the employee, e.g.money, notice etc.

Be mindful, throughout, with your language; your role has been made redundant rather than you've been made redundant. We are meaning making machines and its easier to come to terms with business decisions than it is to wear the of shame personal rejection.

A wise business will offer transition services with a career coach who is waiting on site or available by phone. Research states providing a tailored transition service helps exiting employees come to terms with their new reality so to find work more readily.

Employee tailored transition programs reduce likelihood of any legal action, retain or improve employer branding and retain or improve employee moral and performance.

Bringing love, mindfulness and courage to the conversation of redundancy helps an employee leave with dignity.

Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them, humanity cannot survive.  Dalai Lami.
